While there are many different ways to teach and learn French, we at our Language Institute believe that learning the French language requires the student to instantly be immersed in the target language.
Our French language lessons, taught by our skilled native instructors, are designed to build conversational skills.
Seattle Languages International offers different formats and levels of French group classes.
For students with very specific goals, our language school also offers private, customized French language instruction. French private lessons are a good way to learn French quickly.

French for Travelers Class

Unlike most language courses taught, this French for Travelers course focuses its attention on situations that you most likely will encounter when traveling, like meeting people, reserving hotel rooms, buying things, traveling, asking simple questions, etc. With a combination of pronunciation, grammar, free conversation and role play, you will acquire the basic French skills not only to survive in French speaking countries, but most importantly to enjoy your trip in a special way, showing your appreciation for the people, country and culture you are visiting.
Students who take this French travel class want to participate actively in their travels, feel comfortable when meeting locals and experience French food and culture.
If you don’t want to feel just one of these “regular” tourists, this is the right class for you.
Students who want to continue with French language instruction after they come back from their trip, may contact us for an assessment of their French language skills and level.

Conversational Intro to French Class

In this class for beginning French learners you will acquire basic French language skills.
As we introduce regular And some irregular verb conjugations, our students will instantly be immersed into speaking French.
By the end of this course you will know how to read, count, present yourself, greet and address people using formal and informal forms, ask simple questions, talk and describe yourself, other students, things and places, express possession, relationships and likes and dislikes.
The student will also learn grammar such as the use of common regular and irregular verbs, commands, gender and articles, regular and irregular plural nouns and articles, express existence and the use of possessive adjectives.  A combination of grammar, pronunciation, introducing vocabulary through short texts and useful expressions will give you basic and immediate speaking abilities. 

French Level 2 Class

The French Level 2 class is for students who have previously taken our Conversational Intro class or who have had recently the equivalent of 25-30 hours of French instruction taken in a larger group setting. Students who have taken more than 30 hours in the past, yet are uncertain if this is the right class for them, can call us for an assessment of their French language abilities.
This French class will start with a basic review of conjugations of regular and some irregular verbs in the present.
In this lower intermediate class emphasis is placed on improving your basic speaking abilities and developing fluency. You will learn more and more irregular verbs and use them correctly in lower intermediate conversations. This class enables you to ask questions, understand answers, speak about your daily activities using the present and the future. You will learn how to express abilities, desires, necessity and quantities. Further you will be able to make comparisons, talk about what you and other know and learn how to use various idiomatic expressions.  Small texts about life in France and French society are used to enhance your vocabulary and to further your understanding of French people and French culture.
Grammar taught covers reflexive verbs, future actions with aller, the impersonal subject, irregular verbs with the infinitive construction, prepositions of locations, questions and interrogative words, difference between devoir and falloir, demonstrative adjectives, partitive articles, use of comparatives, direct object pronouns and regular verbs.

French Level 3 Class

The French Level 3 class is for students who have previously taken our Level 2 class or who have the equivalent of 50-60 hours of French instruction taken in a larger group setting.
Students who have taken more than 60 hours in the past, yet are uncertain if this is the right class for them, can call us for an assessment of their French language abilities.
This French class will start with a short review of the contents covered in the Level 2 class.
In this lower intermediate class you will consolidate your French language skills. You will learn how to speak French with more complex sentence structures using not only the present perfect but also the simple past. Reading of small articles and texts covering French music, vacations and French cuisine is used to enlarge and strengthen your vocabulary, new words are learned and used in small discussions where you can express your opinions, feelings and thoughts.
Grammar taught covers the present perfect, the simple past, the combination of these two past tenses, additional irregular verbs, relative pronouns, indirect object pronouns and reflexive verbs.

French Level 4 Class

The French Level 4 class is for students who have previously taken our Level 3 class or who have the equivalent of 75-90 hours of French instruction taken in a larger group setting.
Students who have taken more than 90 hours in the past, yet are uncertain if this is the right class for them, can call us for an assessment of their French language abilities.
This French class will start with a short review of the contents covered in the Level 3 class.
In this intermediate class you will be able to express yourself with ease in many different situations in the present, past and future. You will be able to speak about yourself, about other people and things, express quantities, ask specific questions, speak about ongoing actions, express locations, destinations, extremes, making distinctions, put emphasis on things and persons and saying what you have been doing. Reading of articles and texts covering French diversity, environment, politics, school system and employment is only part of building vocabulary and enhancing speaking abilities. More and more discussions will be used to create real speaking situations in which you will be immersed.
Grammar taught covers articles, the pronoun en, asking words, prepositions, the superlative, making distinctions with lequel and celui, the verb devoir, more on the imperfect, uses of y, emphatic pronouns and the future tense.

French Level 5 Class (Lower Intermediate Class)

The French Level 5 class is for students who have previously taken our Level 4 class or who have the equivalent of 100-120 hours of French instruction taken in a larger group setting.
Students who have taken more than 120 hours in the past, yet are uncertain if this is the right class for them, can call us for an assessment of their French language abilities.
This French class will start with a short review of the contents covered in the Level 4 class.
In this higher intermediate class you will be able to advance your speaking skills by learning how to express obligation, give orders, talk, say what you want others to do, express events in the recent past and narrating in the past tense. You will improve your vocabulary through readings covering facts about communication technology, TV, hygiene and health system in France.
Grammar taught covers the subjunctive, verbs with irregular stems, verbs for traveling, imperatives with pronouns, double object pronouns, the conditional, more on the imperfect and on the subjunctive, present perfect vs. imperfect and the present participle.

French Level 6 Class (Intermediate Class)

The French Level 6 class is for students who have previously taken our Level 5 class or who have the equivalent of 130-150 hours of French instruction taken in a larger group setting.
Students who have taken more than 150 hours in the past, yet are uncertain if this is the right class for them, can call us for an assessment of their French language abilities.
This French class will start with a short review of the contents covered in the Level 5 class.
In this lower advanced class you will be already fluent enough to express feelings, carry a conversation on French current events, read newspaper articles or short stories. Readings about French family values, society, politics, social integration of immigrants and the role of the French woman will further your vocabulary and enhance your speaking abilities. Grammar taught covers reflexive pronouns, adverbs, possessive pronouns, the past conditional,   conjunctions and more on the subjunctive.
